Back roads

This guidebook will not only give you concise directions and information on access, campsites and facilities, but also provides fascinating information about the areas you visit.

Over 60 back roads are described in this publication together with maps showing all the detail to navigate to and along the routes.

Each description lists the length of the road, general information, historical detail about the destinations and information to ensure you know what's ahead of you.

Guidebooks for touring Tasmania

Two guidebooks are offered on this site for use when touring Tasmania. They will help you explore out of the way places Tasmania has to offer. One will assist you in touring the back roads and discovering those little gems along the way. The other is for those who wish to go further and explore the many four wheel drive tracks that are accessible around the State.

Both books have a similar look indicating that they have been designed to compliment each other. You can select one or the other depending on your particular interest, or if you have a 4WD vehicle, you may decide to obtain both. They both provide concise directions and detail on access, campsites and facilities, and interesting snippets of information about places along the way. They also display maps showing the information required to navigate along the routes.

Off-road tracks

Now in its 5th addition, this book is popular with Tasmanians and visitors alike. It is set out in a similar fashion to the Back Roads book making the pair a set for those wishing to combine exploring the back roads as well as the more challenging routes requiring the use of a four wheel drive vehicle.

 Trip descriptions in the guidebook include many coordinates of strategic locations. Files of the coordinates that can be loaded into a GPS are available. See more here.

Visitor Map Tasmania

Also available is the Visitors Map Tasmania (2022). This folded map is handy for planning your trip and locating general points of interest. The map is produced by the Tasmanian Government and is the most up to date version. See more information here.

Both guidebooks make reference to this map to help identify the start of roads and tracks described in the books. At the start of each road or track description there is a small map of Tasmania displaying a symbol of a vehicle which is placed to indicate the approximate location of the road or track. In addition, adjacent to the small map, reference is given to coordinates which can be found on the edges of the Visitors Map to be used to locate the position more accurately.
